The History of
Louis T. Leonowens

Louis T. Leonowens’s story began in 1862 when Louis T. Leonowens first arrived in Siam at the age of 7 with his mother, Anna Harriette Leonowens who was hired to teach English to the children of King Rama IV. Louis attended his mother’s classes along with the Royal children and naturally made many friends among them, including one young Price of his own age, who was later to become the renowned King Chulalongkorn. In 1867 Anna left Siam and took young Louis to Europe to complete his education.

Louis returned to Bangkok in 1881 and by a strange coincidence he met King Chulalongkorn on his arrival who offered him the position of Captain in the King’s Army and as such renewed the Leonowens close association with Thailand. He began his business venture with the Borneo. Company to pioneer teak logging until he founded his own venture in 1889.

On March 3rd, 1905, the Louis Thomas Leonowens Co. was incorporated. In addition to the teak concessions, the company represented leading manufacturers of cement, champagne, whisky, typewriters, engineering products and several assurance and insurance companies. Louis eventually left Siam for the UK in 1913 and remained there until his death in 1919.
